North Carolina law makers have introduced the Unborn victims of violence bill for the past five sessions only to see it languish in committee. Modeled after the federal bill known as the Laci and Conner Peterson Act, House Bill 263 says that a person who commits the crime of murder or manslaughter of a pregnant woman is guilty of a separate offense for the resulting death of the unborn child. The bill’s three other primary sponsors and its 46 co-signers as well as many other legislators have indicated their support. The bill simply makes sense. A national poll shows that when asked the question “If a criminal assaults a woman who carries an unborn child, does that crime have two victims or only one? 80 percent of respondents say “two.”
The federal government and 36 states have laws to prosecute the unlawful killing of an unborn child, laws that have been upheld by numerous federal and state courts. And yet, in North Carolina, the issue hasn’t even been debated on the house floor, thanks in part to two powerful groups, the pro-abortion lobby and domestic violence advocates, and a committee chair who has not allowed the issue to be heard.
The fetal homicide bill does not conflict with the Roe ruling. Lets quit looking for any excuse not to pass this law. This is not about abortion. They want women to have a choice-well these women who were murdered had a choice and chose to have their babies. Then that choice was taken away.
Rep. Deborah Ross, who chairs the Committee on Judiciary I, where the bill remains says: “She refused to hear the study bill that would have opened the door for those types of discussion. As for the senate side, Sen. Andrew Brock (R-Davie) introduced SB 295, a very similar measure which also wound up in the senate Judiciary I committee, chaired by Sen. Martin Nesbitt (D-Buncombe).
The only thing that will get the bills out of the committee and to the floor will be a word from senate and house leadership to the respective committee chairs.
Calls and letters to Senate Pro Tempore Marc Basnight and house speaker Joe Hackney, especially from bill supporters in every district, might bring needed pressure to move the bill along.
Although the bill’s primary sponsors are Republicans, The Unborn Victims of Violence Act is not a partisan issue. People say they are lifelong democrats, pro-choice, liberal democrats who supports the bill.
People get reduced sentences too often and a fetal homicide bill would help prevent that. “Many of us feel that if you also could be convicted or tried for the death of the fetus, that you would probably get a guarantee that these people would serve some serious time.”
The current laws North Carolina now has in place do not even come close to being strong enough. The current law states that any person, who in the commission of a felony, causes injury to a woman, knowing the woman to be pregnant, in which injury results in the miscarriage or stillbirth by the woman is guilty of a felony that is one class higher than the felony committed.
We were very successful when we organized the “Coalition for Jessica’s law.” After two years of delay, Jessica’s law was finally signed by the Governor . We have now organized the “Justice for All coalition” with the hopes of getting this bill signed into law after so many years of delay. It’s passed time that we pay tribute to the young women where the Judicial system has failed them such as, Michelle Young, 29, who was four months pregnant with her second child. Young’s sister found her beaten to death on the bedroom floor. She was lying in a pool of blood with her 2-year-old daughter who was unharmed, by her side. Janet Abaroa was found stabbed to death in her Durham home in April of 2005. Jennifer Neilson was pregnant with her third child, she was murdered in Raleigh at 8 months pregnant. Maria Lauterback’s unborn child had been buried with her, in the fire pit where the killer tried to destroy the evidence by setting both bodies ablaze. Megan Lynn Touma, another military woman. The Fort Bragg soldier, seven months pregnant was found dead in June. Contribution’s to our not-for profit organization can be sent to:

Dear Rich -

I am looking at moving to a beautiful home in Mint Hill NC and would like to know what there is to do in the area. My wife and I like to hike and walk, and spend time outdoors. I know you are familiar with this area and any advice on where to go, or places to visit would be appreciated!

Mel
Mint Hill, NC

Hi Mel -

You are right–I am very familiar with the Mint Hill area! I have been fortunate to assist many buyers and sellers in Mint Hill in the last few years and I am always happy to recommend this area. Mint Hill is one of the hidden gems in the Charlotte area and I am glad you have found a great new home to make your own.

There are many great parks and greenways in and around Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks and Rec website is a great resource. In Mint Hill itself there are two parks, Fairview Park and Wilgrove Park.

Fairgrove is located at 8850 Fairview Road in Mint Hill. This park is over 55 acres in size with amenities for all ages. There are two soccer fields surrounded by an asphalt bike/roller blade path. There are racquetball and tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, and a nine-hole disc golf course that winds its way through the park. My favorite park it the nature trail with plants and trees native to this part of the North Carolina. Fargrove Park in Mint Hill also has a concession stand, and restrooms.

Wilgrove Park is located at 7750 Jim Harper Lane off Wilgrove-Mint Hill Road. Wilgrove Park has a softball field, four tennis courts, and natural walking trail that circles the perimeter of the park.

I also definitely recommend doing the Movies on the Lawn too. It is a nice evening out–for a couple or a family.

Enjoy living in Mint Hill–and please let me know if you need any more information on living in Mint Hill or the Charlotte area.

You may be surprised to find out that there are some cities, Manhattan, Austin Texas and our own Charlotte North Carolina that have been weathering and even growing in the current market.

The real estate downturn has spread across the country ever since the credit crisis first began eight months ago. But there are some areas where that seem to be immune to the crunch or at least resilient—places like Charlotte, NC.

This is a natural cycle and right now we have a healthy buyer’s market as well as positive property value growth. This area has done really well, because it never got over-inflated, the economy here is strong and there are many great places to live.

While there have been changes, less new builds and increased sale sell times, Charlotte continues to show promise as a city which can not only survive but grow in the coming months.

So what if you aren’t looking to move? Smart investors can get in on some great opportunities right now. Since Charlotte remains a hot-spot people are still moving here at a record-pace. That said, many are coming from areas of the country where they are having problems selling their homes. This causes an increase in time a house here will be on the market and will lower the sale price. As the market strengthens around the country, there will likely be an influx of newcomers in the coming years. An investor who can sit on or rent out a home may stand to make a tidy profit.

Charlotte is one of the best cities to live in the US. The economy is good, the weather is near perfect and the people are welcoming—and it is still a great place to buy (and sell!) real estate!

The primary
difficulty with learning to ride a bike is that the child is expected
to learn two skills at the same time: balance and propulsion. Instead
of trying to teach both skills at the same time, focus on balance
and steering first (without trying to pedal). Let your child simply
sit on the bike and push himself around to get use to the feel.
After your child is comfortable with this, either give him a gentle
push or find a gentle-sloping hill so he can practice coasting without
touching the ground.

After your child
can coast comfortably for about 25 feet, it’s time to add propulsion
to the equation. Hold the bike upright and give a gentle push to
get your child moving. Do not hold the handlebar or seat as this
will only hinder his ability to understand balance. In addition,
if you plan to run alongside and hold your child up, do so by holding
them at the shoulders. The process may be slow at first, but within
a few hours your child should be able to ride about 50 feet without
touching the ground.

As your child’s
balance and propulsion skills get better, you may want to raise
the seat and handlebars or move up to a bigger bike. The small bike
is only used to teach balance and propulsion skills. Once they master
these, a size-appropriate bike will be easier to propel and steer.
Most children will figure out how to start pedaling from a stationary
position without assistance after they’ve been peddling for a few
hours.

In short, these
Dear Rich,
Our house in Mint Hill has been on the market about 30 days. We are confident that it will sell soon, but we are getting feedback that the house looks “dated.”Do you have any ideas on how to modernize the house without going overboard? We don’t mind making a few purchases to stage the house or give it that more contemporary look, but we also don’t want to spend our down-payment money on trying to get this house sold.
We are just looking at some first-line ideas to give the house a fresh, (and inexpensive) face-lift.

Marianne M.
Mint Hill
Charlotte, NC
Dear Marianne -

Finding an easy and inexpensive way to giving a room a more modern look is not hard. For less than $100, you can completely transform the look of a room—all you need is a weekend and a screwdriver!

Prospective buyers may make a judgment on your house if you haven’t taken the time to modernize—and that is to your detriment. While it may be just as easy for the new owner to do this things, it is always a good idea to do the work yourself if you can. I have seen buyers walk away from a perfectly good house, just because of decor or the fixtures–it just makes the house look “old” - and no one likes “old”.

So here is what I recommend: If you have already put a fresh coat of paint up, and decluttered then consider some new fixtures. New drawer handles or knobs can cost little as $2 each—less even if you buy them in packs. So check your bathrooms, kitchen, built-ins, etc. for places you can update. Remember to keep it simple. Clean lines, and simplicity sell.

And while you are at it, check the sink and bathroom faucets, sinks and toilets. These may be another easy update that will keep buyers interested. In my experience, you will always make your money back (and sometimes then some…) on updates to kitchen and bathrooms! So think of it as an investment. Feeling especially handy? You might also try updating any ceiling-mount light fixtures or doorknobs—but again, keep it simple!
